Punch comes in from the cold

A NATIONAL touring exhibition, "Carnivalesque" features a Punch & Judy booth complete with puppets made by Sgt. Stone.

Carnival, which roughly translated from Italian means 'no meat', was the period shortly before lent when everyone partyed before 40 days of austerity. The "Carnivalesque" exhibition celebrates this time and includes work by Goya, Breughel and Hogarth. "I'm a bit nervous at the prospect of exhibiting my work alongside such distinguished artists", admitted Sgt. Stone, "but at least I won't have the embarrassment of meeting them at the private view!"

But not all the artists exhibiting in Carnivalesque are dead! The exhibition, organised by London's Hayward Gallery for the Arts Council of England, also features contemporary artists and performers such as Max Beckmann, Diane Arbus Leigh Bowery and Paul McCarthy.

Spilt over three sites - Brighton Museum, the University of Brighton and Fabrica - Carvivalesque opened on 6 May 2000 and will continue until 2 July.
